روشن از پرتوِ رویت نظری نیست که نیست

مِنَّت خاکِ درت بر بصری نیست که نیست

ناظرِ روی تو صاحب نظرانند آری

سِرِّ گیسوی تو در هیچ سَری نیست که نیست

اشکِ غَمّازِ من ار سرخ برآمد چه عجب؟

خجل از کردهٔ خود پرده دری نیست که نیست

تا به دامن ننشیند ز نسیمش گَردی

سیل خیز از نظرم ره‌گذری نیست که نیست

تا دم از شامِ سرِ زلفِ تو هر جا نزنند

با صبا گفت و شنیدم سحری نیست که نیست

من از این طالع شوریده بِرَنجَم ور نی

بهره‌مند از سَرِ کویت دگری نیست که نیست

از حیایِ لبِ شیرینِ تو ای چشمهٔ نوش

غرق آب و عرق اکنون شکری نیست که نیست

مصلحت نیست که از پرده برون افتد راز

ور نه در مجلسِ رندان خبری نیست که نیست

شیر در بادیهٔ عشق تو روباه شود

آه از این راه که در وی خطری نیست که نیست

آب چشمم که بر او مِنَّت خاکِ درِ توست

زیرِ صد مِنَّتِ او خاکِ دری نیست که نیست

از وجودم قَدَری نام و نشان هست که هست

ور نه از ضعف در آن جا اثری نیست که نیست

غیر از این نکته که حافظ ز تو ناخشنود است

در سراپای وجودت هنری نیست که نیست

The Heart-Ravisher (God) departed; and hint (thereof) to those heart-gone (the lovers) made not

Of the companion of the city; and of the friend of the journey, recollection He made not.

Either, my fortune abandoned the path of love

Or He (the Heart-Ravisher), by the highway of Tarikat, journeying made not.

I standing, like the candle, to make my life a sacrifice for Him

Like the morning-breeze, passing by me, He— made not.

I said: — " Perchance, by weeping, I may make His heart kind." Impression on

the hard stone (the true Beloved's heart), the drops of rain (my tears),—— made not. 5.

Although, through grief, the wing and the feather of my heart became broken, Go

out of my head, the crude madness of being a lover it made not.

I (O true Beloved!) every one kissed Thy face who saw my (weeping)

eye! Without value, the work that our (weeping) eye did, it made not. 3.

The second lines of couplets 3 and 5 occur in Ode 131, couplets 4 and 7. 6. Observe the sana1 at-wltifat in the use of " my eye "

and "our eye." In the remotest ages, men saluted the sun, moon, and stars by kissing the hand, a superstition to which Job never subscribed, as he states, xxxi, 26.

The earliest Christian bishops gave their hands to be kissed by the ministers at the altar. The custom declined, as a religious ceremony, but

conti- nued as a Court ceremony, the kissing of the hand of the Sovereign being regarded as a mark of the highest favour in Christendom.

The beautiful Duchess of Devonshire bribed with a kiss many a voter for Fox in the famous Westminster election, and the equally beautiful and bewitching Lady Gordon, when the

Scottish regiments had been thinned by reverses, used to tempt lads by placing the recruiting shilling in her lips, whence he who would might take it with his own.

In Finland, the women consider a salute upon the lips as the greatest insult even

from their own husbands. At one time English duellists used to kiss each other before firing.

Muhammadans to M ecca kiss the black stone and the four corners

of the Ka'ba. The Romish priest on Palm Sunday kisses the palm.

The tradition about kissing the toe of the Pontiff is that one of the Leos

substituted the toe for the right hand because his own right hand had been mutilated.
