Ghazal 72

راهی‌ست راهِ عِشْق که هیچَش کِنارِه نیست

آن‌جا جُز آن‌که جان بِسِپارَنْد، چارِه نیست

هر گَه که دِل به عِشْق دِهی، خوش دَمی بُوَد

در کارِ خِیْر، حاجَتِ هیچ اِسْتِخاره نیست

ما را زِ مَنْعِ عَقْل مَتَرْسان و مِی بیار!

کآن شِحْنِه در وِلایَتِ ما، هیچ کارِه نیست

اَز چَشْمِ خود بِپُرس که ما را که می‌کُشَد؟

جانا، گُناهِ طالِع و جُرْمِ سِتارِه نیست

او را به چَشْمِ پاک، تَوان دید چون هِلال

هَر دیده، جایِ جِلْوِهٔ آن ماه‌پارِه نیست

فُرْصَت شِمُر طَریقِهٔ رِنْدی که این نِشان

چون راهِ گَنْج، بَر هَمِه‌کَس، آشْکارِه نیست

نَگْرِفْت در تو، گِرْیِهٔ «حافِظ»، به هیچ رو

حِیْرانِ آن دِلَم که کَم از سَنْگِ خارِه نیست

The fast (the time of austerity and of inward purity) a side hath gone; and the 'fd (the time of manifestations, of glory of God's qualities, of tumult of love, and of the light of the heart) hath come; and hearts have risen (in tumult)

In the wine-house (of the heart), the wine (of love) hath come into tumult; and it is necessary to ask (for the Murshid).

The season of (hypocritical) austerity boasters, weighty of life, hath passed

Hath risen, the time of gladness and of joy-making of profligates.

Him, who like us drinketh the cup, what reproach reacheth ?

In regard to the profligate lover, neither is defect, nor is fault.

That wine-drinker (profligate) in whom is neither the (double) face, nor hypo- crisy,

Is better than an austerity-boaster, in whom is the face of hypocrisy. 5.

We are neither hypocritical profligates, nor the companions of hypocrisy: Witness to this state is He, who " is the Knower-of-hearts." The ordinances of God, we perform

and do evil to none: Whatever they say is " unlawful," we say not " it is lawful.

" What mattereth it-^— if thou and I drink some goblets of wine ? Wine is of the blood of grapes

it is not of your blood.

This (wine-drinking) is not the defect that, from this defect, injury will be

And if it be the defect, what matter? The man without defect. is where ? 6.

rahi-st rah 'eshgh ke hichash kenaree nist

an-ja joz an-ke jan beseparand, charee nist

har gae ke del be 'eshgh dehi, khosh dami bud

dar kar kheyr, hajat hich estekhare nist

ma ra ze man'e aghl matarsan o mi biyar!

kan shehnee dar velayate ma, hich karee nist

az cheshm khod bepors ke ma ra ke mi-koshad?

jana, gonah tale' o jorme setaree nist

u ra be cheshm pak, tavan did chon helal

har dide, jay jelve an mah-paree nist

forsat shemor tarighe-ye rendi ke in neshan

chon rah ganj, bar hame-kas, ashkaree nist

nagreft dar to, gerye-ye hafez, be hich ru

heyrane an delam ke kam az sange kharee nist
