Ghazal 289

مَجمَعِ خوبی و لطف است عِذار چو مَهَش

لیکَنَش مِهر و وفا نیست خدایا بِدَهَش

دلبرم شاهد و طفل است و به بازی روزی

بِکُشد زارم و در شرع نباشد گُنَهَش

من همان بِه که از او نیک نگه دارم دل

که بد و نیک ندیده‌ست و ندارد نِگَهَش

بویِ شیر از لبِ همچون شِکَرَش می‌آید

گرچه خون می‌چکد از شیوهٔ چشمِ سیَهَش

چارده ساله بُتی چابُکِ شیرین دارم

که به جان حلقه به گوش است مَهِ چاردَهَش

از پِی آن گُلِ نورُستِه دلِ ما یارب

خود کجا شد که ندیدیم در این چند گَهَش؟

یارِ دلدارِ من ار قلب بدین سان شِکَنَد

بِبَرَد زود به جانداریِ خود پادشهَش

جان به شکرانه کنم صرف گَر آن دانهٔ دُر

صدفِ سینهٔ حافظ بُوَد آرامگَهَش

From the evil eye, for thy good face God, (be)-^— Hafiz! For

unto us, all goodness, it (thy face) hath done O Hafiz I Come.

For of peace, of friendship, and of fidelity, 'tis the time

For, with thee, mine no quarrel is, nor dispute O Hafiz! Though, thy heart's blood, my ruby (lip) hath drunk, — take (to thy heart's desire) From my lip, in lieu of it (thy heart's blood), the kiss, (as) the blood-price, O Hafiz!

Thou, whence ? Hope of union with Him, whence ? To this skirt, reacheth not the hand of

every beggar — — O Hafiz! 5. From union with that (illusory) beloved, gained my heart what delight?

Mine is the gift, life-giving, O grief-stricken Hafiz! To the tress, or to the mole, of idols, (beloved ones), again attach not thy heart

If, from this snare and from this calamity, thou escape O Hafiz!

Zahid! the darvish garment of juggling, thou hast put on

go! The dregs of pain, thou hast drunk; come O Hafiz! At the time of morn, with heart and soul, bewail like profligates; That moment, one single prayer for my work, make O Hafiz!

Come! sing the ghazal beautiful, delightful, full of burning (passion)

For joy-giving is thy verse, and life-increasing O Hafiz! i.

In the first line Hafiz means guardian. THE

yar deldar man ar ghalab bedin san shekanad

bebarad zud be jandarye khod padashhash

jan be shakrane konam saraf gar an dan-ye dar

sadfe sine hafez bud aramgahash
