Ghazal 27

در دیرِ مغان آمد، یارم قدحی در دست

مست از می و میخواران از نرگسِ مستش مست

در نعلِ سمندِ او شکلِ مهِ نو پیدا

وز قدِ بلندِ او بالایِ صنوبر، پست

آخر به چه گویم هست از خود خبرم، چون نیست

وز بَهرِ چه گویم نیست با وی نظرم، چون هست

شمعِ دلِ دمسازم، بنشست چو او برخاست

و افغان ز نظربازان، برخاست چو او بنشست

گر غالیه خوش بو شد، در گیسویِ او پیچید

ور وَسمه کمانکَش گشت، در ابروی او پیوست

بازآی که بازآید عمرِ شدهٔ حافظ

هرچند که ناید باز، تیری که بِشُد از شست

In praise of those good qualities (of the Beloved

or of the murshid), every sub- tlety that I uttered, Every one who heard, said:— ''The sayer of this, what an excellent speaker is he!" I spake saying: — "The powerless soul, Thou pitiest when ?" He said: — "At that time when, between (the lover and the Beloved) life is not the intervener.' At first (on the day of Alast), easy appeared the acquisition of love and of profligacy: In the end, in (attempting) the acquisition of these excellences, the soul con- sumed.

On the head of the gibbet, this subtlety, sweetly singeth Hallaj Mansur

— "Questions (of love) like these, of the Shafi'i (order), ask ye not." I 5.

I have given my heart to a Friend, bold, decorated, arrayed, Agreeable of nature, laudable of disposition. Like Thy intoxicated (obliquely-looking) eye, I was at the time of corner-tak- ing (retiring to solitude)

Now, like Thy (inclined) eye-brow, I became an incliner to the intoxicated. 2.

At that time when, passing out from thy own soul, with the true

Beloved thou mixest; aught save Him, forgettest; and for Him not existent becomest.

dar deyr moghan amad, yaarm ghadhi dar dast

mast az mi o mikhuaran az narges masatash mast

dar n'le samande u shakle mah now pida

vaz ghad boland u balaye sanubr, pasat

akhar be che guyam hast az khod khabaram, chon nist

vaz bahr che guyam nist ba vai nazaram, chon hast

sham' del damsazm, banashasat cho u barkhast

o afghan ze nazarbazan, barkhast cho u banashasat

gar ghalie khosh bu shod, dar gisuye u pichid

var vasme kamankash gasht, dar abruy u piust

bazai ke bazayad 'omr shad-ye hafez

harachanad ke naid baz, tiri ke beshod az shasat
