Ghazal 208

خستگان را چو طلب باشد و قُوَّت نَبُوَد

گر تو بیداد کنی شرطِ مُروَّت نَبُوَد

ما جفا از تو ندیدیم و تو خود نَپْسَندی

آنچه در مذهبِ اربابِ طریقت نبود

خیره آن دیده که آبش نَبَرَد گریهٔ عشق

تیره آن دل که در او شمعِ محبت نبود

دولت از مرغِ همایون طلب و سایهٔ او

زان که با زاغ و زَغَن شَهپَرِ دولت نبود

گر مدد خواستم از پیرِ مُغان عیب مکن

شیخ ما گفت که در صومعه همّت نبود

چون طهارت نَبُوَد کعبه و بتخانه یکیست

نَبُوَد خیر در آن خانه که عصمت نبود

حافظا علم و ادب ورز که در مجلسِ شاه

هر که را نیست ادب لایقِ صحبت نبود

Those shattered, when they are in search (of thee) and (theirs) power is

not, If thou vex, the condition of manliness — —, is not.

From thee, we experienced no tyranny

and thou thyself approvest not What, in the Order of the Shaikhs of the Path, is not.

When there is no purity (of heart from infidelity), one are the Ka'ba and the idol-house

Well, it is not when, in the house (of the heart), chastity is not.

So long as the sorcery of thy eye giveth no aid to (the

art of) sorcery, In the consuming of love's taper, light—— is not. 5.

Blind that eye, whose water (of lustre) love's fire took not: Dark that heart, wherein love's light is not. Thy beauty made me acquainted

with the end of the cord of my work (love for God): Be it not that (ever) such a help of fortune (mine) is not.

From the rust (darkness and defect) of lust, whoever is not a

pure mirror Worthy of the face of wisdom, his eye— is not.

From the auspicious bird (the prosperous one, or the perfect 'Arif) seek fortune, and his shadow, For the reason

that with the (ugly) crow and the (mean) kite, the long wing. feather (of flight) of fortune is not.

khasatgan ra cho talab bashad o ghovvat nabud

gar to bidad koni sharte moravvat nabud

ma jafa az to nadidim o to khod napsandi

anche dar mazhbe arbabe tarighat nabud

khire an dide ke absh nabarad gari-ye 'eshgh

tire an del ke dar u sham' mahabat nabud

dolat az morgh hamaiun talab o saye u

zan ke ba zagh o zaghan shahpare dolat nabud

gar madad khuasatm az pir moghan 'eyb makon

sheykh ma goft ke dar some'e hemmat nabud

chon tahart nabud k'be o batkhane yakist

nabud khir dar an khane ke 'samat nabud

hafeza 'elm o adb varz ke dar majles shah

har ke ra nist adb laighe sohbat nabud
