Ghazal 196

آنان که خاک را به نظر کیمیا کنند

آیا بُوَد که گوشهٔ چشمی به ما کنند

دَردَم نهفته بِه ز طبیبانِ مدعی

باشد که از خزانهٔ غیبم دوا کنند

معشوق چون نقاب ز رخ درنمی‌کشد

هر کس حکایتی به تَصوّر چرا کنند؟

چون حُسنِ عاقبت نه به رندی و زاهدی‌ست

آن بِه که کارِ خود به عنایت رها کنند

بی معرفت مباش که در من‌یزیدِ عشق

اهلِ نظر معامله با آشنا کنند

حالی درونِ پرده بسی فتنه می‌رود

تا آن زمان که پرده برافتد چه‌ها کنند

گر سنگ از این حدیث بنالد عجب مدار

صاحبدلان حکایتِ دل خوش ادا کنند

مِی خور که صد گناه ز اغیار در حجاب

بهتر ز طاعتی که به روی و ریا کنند

پیراهنی که آید از او بویِ یوسفم

ترسم برادران غَیورش قَبا کنند

بگذر به کویِ میکده تا زُمرِهٔ حضور

اوقاتِ خود ز بهر تو صرفِ دعا کنند

پنهان ز حاسدان به خودم خوان که مُنعِمان

خیرِ نهان برایِ رضایِ خدا کنند

حافظ دوامِ وصل میسر نمی‌شود

شاهان کم التفات به حالِ گدا کنند

Thou knowest what tale (it is) that the harp and the lyre (renowned men of piety) make ? " Secretly drink ye wine (of love

and reveal it not) that thee precious they may make.

" The honour of love and the splendour of lovers, they take: " The censure of the young; and the reproof of the old, they make." They say: — "

(To any one), utter ye not love's mystery; (from any one), hear it not: " It is a difficult story (for the concealing of love is impossible), whereof relation, they make.

Without the door, we being deceived by a hundred deceits, Let us see, — within the screen, what device they make. 5. Time's vexation, they give the Pir of the Magians

Behold what (sport) with the Pir, these holy travellers— make!

One can purchase a hundred honours with half a

glance, In this act (of glance-making), deficiency, lovely ones—— make.

With effort and struggle, a crowd established union with the (true) Beloved

Reliance on Fate (saying if union be decreed union will be), another crowd make.

In short, on Time's permanency, rely not

For this (world) is the workshop wherein change they • make. Save the base coin, is no result.

Yet, In this fancy (it is) that vainly alchemy they make. 10. Drink wine. For the Shaikh, and Hafiz, and

the Mufti and the Muhtasib, All — when thou lookest well— fraud (openly abstaining from wine, secretly drinking wine) make.

The Murshids (who are on the prayer-mat of guidance) are all against this knowledge

(of love's mysteries). Hence, a difficulty whereby the heart becometh wounded. 2x2 134. i.

Those Murshids, who (from exceeding firmness), with their glance alchemy of the dust

(of the traveller's existence) make, At us, eye-cornering (oblique glancing), do they make?

My pain concealed from the claimant's physician, best

It may be that, its remedy from the treasury of the hidden, they (Fate and Destiny) make.

Since they carried not away the beauty of ease

and austerity is, That best that, as a favour, release of their own work, they make.

Since the (true) Beloved uplifteth not the veil from His face, Why doth every one, in imagination, a tale make? 5. Now, within the screen, many a calamity goeth

At that time when the screen falleth down, let us see what they make.

aia bud ke gushe chashmi be ma konand

dardam nahafte be ze tabibane mad'i

bashad ke az khazan-ye ghibm dua konand

ma'shugh chon neghab ze rokh daranmi-kashad

har kas hakaiti be tasavavr chera konand?

chon hosn 'aghabt na be rendi o zahdi-st

an be ke kar khod be 'nait raha konand

bi ma'refat mabash ke dar man-yazide 'eshgh

ahl nazar m'amle ba ashna konand

hali darune parde basi fetne mi-ravad

ta an zaman ke parde barafatd che-ha konand

gar sanag az in hadis banald ajab madar

sahabadlan hekayat del khosh ada konand

mi khor ke sad gonah ze aghiar dar hajab

bahatar ze ta'ti ke be ruy o ria konand

pirahni ke ayad az u buy yausafm

tarasam baradran ghaiursh ghaba konand

bagazar be kuy meykade ta zomre-ye hozur

aughate khod ze bahr to sarfe do'a konand

penhan ze hasdan be khudm khan ke mon'eman

khire nahan baraye razaye khoda konand

hafez davam vasl misr nemi-shavad

shahan kam alatfat be hal geda konand
