غزل شمارهٔ ۱۷۸

هر که شد مَحرمِ دل در حرمِ یار بِمانْد

وان که این کار ندانست در انکار بِمانْد

اگر از پرده برون شد دلِ من عیب مکن

شُکرِ ایزد که نه در پردهٔ پندار بِمانْد

صوفیان واسِتَدَنْد از گروِ مِی همه رَخْت

دلقِ ما بود که در خانهٔ خَمّار بِمانْد

محتسب شیخ شد و فِسقِ خود از یاد بِبُرد

قصّهٔ ماست که در هر سرِ بازار بِمانْد

هر مِیِ لعل کز آن دستِ بلورین سِتَدیم

آبِ حسرت شد و در چشمِ گهربار بِمانْد

جز دلِ من کز ازل تا به ابد عاشق رفت

جاودان کس نشنیدیم که در کار بِمانْد

گشت بیمار که چون چشمِ تو گردد نرگس

شیوهٔ تو نَشُدَش حاصل و بیمار بِمانْد

از صدایِ سخنِ عشق ندیدم خوشتر

یادگاری که در این گنبدِ دَوّار بِمانْد

داشتم دلقی و صد عیبِ مرا می‌پوشید

خرقه رهنِ مِی و مطرب شد و زُنّار بِمانْد

بر جمالِ تو چنان صورتِ چین حیران شد

که حدیثش همه‌جا در در و دیوار بِمانْد

به تماشاگَهِ زلفش دلِ حافظ روزی

شد که بازآید و جاوید گرفتار بِمانْد

Whoever became the confidant of his own heart, in the sacred fold of the (true) Beloved. remained

He, who knew not this matter, in ignorance——* remained.

If, forth from the screen, went my heart (abandoning outward reputation and choosing evilness) censure not

Thanks to God, that not, in the screen of thought (self-worshipping and pride), Jt remained.

A darvish garment, I had; and it concealed a hundred faults

For wine and the minstrel, the khirka was pawned; and the mystical cord (of a hundred faults) remained.

Out from pawn for wine, the Sufis (holy travellers) took their khirka

Our darvish-habit, it was that, in the vintner's house, remained. 5.

More pleasant than the sound of love's speech, naught I heard

('Twas) a great token, that, in this revolving dome remained.

Passed intoxicated, other khirka-wearers: and passed (the tale of them):

Our tale is that which, at the head of every market, remained.

Save my heart, that, — from eternity without beginning to eternity without end, — proceeded Thy

lover, 1 have heard of none, who ever in the work (of being Thy lover) remained. i.

The first line refers to the perfect S.rif

the second to the learned one who is also practical Calim- i-amil) that one, who knew his own heart, entered the true Beloved's sacred fold.

That one who knew not his own heart (its mysteries and truths) remained in ignorance. This refers to: — " Who knoweth himself knoweth God." In his " History of Civilization,"

Vol. ii, p. 89, Buckle says:— " We should rather say— We believe in God because we know ourselves." Strange is this approaching of western and of eastern thought. 4.

The hypocritical travellers were in the first stage of intoxication; but, out of it, they, at length,

passed. But, in the vintner's house, my darvish garment remained; ever, from intoxication, I escaped not. 6.

I£hirka. See Ode 124. Every red wine that, from that crystal (pure) hand (of the murshid), I took, Became the water of regret

and, in my eye, the jewel of rain (tear) remained.

har mi la'l kaz an dast balurin setadim

ab hasrat shod o dar cheshm gharbar bemand

joz del man kaz azal ta be abad 'ashegh raft

javdan kas nashnidim ke dar kar bemand

gasht bimar ke chon cheshm to garadad narges

shive to nashodash hasl o bimar bemand

az sadaye sokhan 'eshgh nadidm khushatr

yaadgari ke dar in ganabde davvar bemand

dashatm dalghi o sad 'eyb mara mi-pushid

kherghe rahne mi o motreb shod o zonnar bemand

bar jamal to chenan surte chin hiran shod

ke hadissh hame-ja dar dar o diuar bemand

be tamashagahe zalafash del hafez ruzi

shod ke bazayad o jauid garaftar bemand
